Old Badami Town, India
Badami (Karnataka State, India) is a town poised on the edge of modernity. Nestled in a rocky sandstone valley, seated upon the ancient regal capital of Vatapi, the town is steeped in history and heritage. Within, and of, the bare sandstone rock is a multitude of forts, gateways, temples, sanctuaries, inscriptions and reliefs dating from the 6th to 8th Centuries . Now a popular location for 21st Century tourists and Bollywood film makers alike, Badami is a glimpse into the past for visitors and a great source of pride for locals.
All the while, as with many similar places in India, the town’s main street bustles with the mobilisation of infrastructure and development. A New Badami is being created. Within the landscape, caught somewhere between the past and the future, looked over by one and overlooked by the other, is the present. Here, amongst a network of alleyways and avenues running between rammed-earth and whitewashed buildings, out front on terraced doorsteps and ledges the people of Old Badami Town make place to meet, play, work or trade – and offer the casual passer-by a glance into their daily lives.
