The Shekhawati Region of Rajasthan, India
The Shekhawati Region of Rajasthan, India
Despite it's location within one of the most popular tourist destinations on Earth, just a stone's throw from the well-trodden trail of India's Golden Triangle, Shekhawati is unfrequented by travelers. Considering it's rich history and bejeweled architecture this is surprising.
Gaining prominence 400 years ago as a land of the great Moghul emperors, seeding the semi-arid desert with fortifications and Islamic architecture. 150 years later the ruling Rajputs, feudal Thakurs, built fortified palaces and, along with their desire to fill them with showy fineries, enriched the local Marwari traders who took to their newfound wealth with even greater exuberance and created majestic hand-painted homes (havelis) which now earn Shekhawati the nickname "Rajasthan's Open Air Art Gallery"
