Now and then people ask if I do much post-processing.
Yes I do!
As a really rough guess I'd say 50% of the images I display have been through 'the digital darkroom'. The extent of processing varies, but I try to keep in line with the recording of real moments in time, unstaged & undirected. And often I use post-process as a means of maintaining reality. This obviously excludes 'faked' images which are self-evident, if not labelled as such. Mostly I am merely trying to enhance my captures into the same images made more artistic and aesthetically pleasing.
At the simplest level it's shifting colour hues and tones. This is a necessary process, even if you use the camera's 'auto' settings (you're just letting the camera do all the hard work for you!)
More advanced processes (see gallery) are neither 'magical' nor 'manipulation', but using available technology to utilize the full range of detail and tones already captured by the camera's sensor (in much the same way they did over 100 years ago with the development of more light sensitive film).
Is it artificial?
Yes it is. It's a photograph!
